Business administration is a great way to start your career and gain skills that are useful in almost any workplace. Administrators are an important part of organisations of all sizes, including businesses, councils, and charities.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain real workplace experience while learning how an organisation works.

Depending on your role, you could:

  • communicate with customers, colleagues, and other organisations
  • use different IT systems and office software
  • organise meetings, information, and documents
  • support projects and day-to-day activities
  • work independently and as part of a team
  • help find ways to make services and processes better

You’ll develop valuable skills in communication, organisation, teamwork, and problem-solving, as well as building your confidence in the workplace.

The skills you gain can be used in lots of different jobs and industries, giving you a great starting point for your future career. As you gain experience, you could also take on more responsibility and progress towards supervisory or management roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants should be capable of developing a range of business administration skills which will enable them to carry out the apprenticeship. Acceptance onto the programme will be subject to successfully completing a recruitment session and initial assessment. This is followed by an employer interview.

The apprenticeship is also available to existing Middlesbrough Council employees who are working in a suitable job role.

While Maths and English at Level 2 or GCSE Grade C (4-5) or above are desirable, these can be delivered as part of the apprenticeship.

The assessment process

Portfolio interview

An interview which assesses the apprentice’s competence, self-reflection, judgement and understanding of their apprenticeship.

A showcase portfolio compiled by the apprentice provides the structure for this conversation.

Project/improvement process

The apprentice delivers a presentation to the independent end-point assessor on a project they have completed or a process they have improved.

Online multiple choice knowledge test

50 multiple choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes under invigilation conditions.

The Assessment is graded Pass or Distinction. Middlesbrough Community Learning currently has a 100% achievement rate in this apprenticeship standard.

In addition to receiving their Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) apprenticeship certificate, the apprentice will receive a City & Guilds statement of achievement for end-point assessment.

Reviews

Your progress will be reviewed throughout your programme with meetings taking place every 10 to 12 weeks to assess the progress you have made or to identify any support you need.

Reviews will involve you, your learning and development coach, and your manager or mentor.

Progression

On completion of your apprenticeship you could progress into a more responsible career role and onto higher level specialist apprenticeships, for example team leading and management.
